2026 – A decisive year for the KliK Foundation

Last year, the KliK Foundation came a significant step closer to the fulfilment of its statutory carbon offset obligation by 2030. Contrary to public debate – most recently during the urgent climate debate in the National Council on 17 December 2025 – there are more than enough excellent projects in Switzerland and abroad through which the KliK Foundation can achieve the required reduction of 30 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent between 2025 and 2030 with its financial support.

The focus is now primarily on the approximately 60 projects in Swiss partner countries that the KliK Foundation would like to financially support. It has already pledged support to half of them, with the other half to follow in the course of 2026. However, only ten of the projects have been authorised by both Switzerland and the respective partner country in accordance with the rules of the Paris Agreement. This means that all those involved still have a huge task ahead of them this year. Thanks to the experience gained last year, however, the authorisation procedures are now so well established that we believe the 2026 portfolio can be consolidated.

At the same time, it will be important to implement and ramp up the authorised projects as quickly as possible so that they can achieve the emission reductions we at the KliK Foundation need this year to fulfil the 2026 obligation to carry out carbon offsets of over 4 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

Focus on Switzerland

Farming with climate-friendly nitrogen fertiliser

Climate protection in modern agriculture: thanks to the supported programme from First Climate, which is financed by the KliK Foundation, this is easily achievable and attractive to farmers in terms of marketable production. At his farm in Wohlen, Aargau, Raphael Müller shows us how he uses the special fertiliser NovaTec 26 to make his potato production more efficient while protecting the soil and climate.

The podium of national supported programmes

The KliK Foundation continues to support investments in projects that demonstrably reduce greenhouse gas emissions, are economically viable with financial support and can be operated in the long term. Particularly encouraging: the three largest supported programmes in the KliK Foundation's portfolio – Carbon sequestration in Swiss wood products, Biofuels and Freight shift from road to rail – have together reduced CO₂ emissions by around 1.3 million tonnes in the latest monitoring period2024. This corresponds to more than a third of the total carbon offset obligation of around 3.3 million tonnes of CO₂ for 2024.

Focus on international activities

Official launch of cooperation with Zambia

On 22 January, Switzerland and Zambia officially entered into force their bilateral agreement on the implementation of Mitigation activities in accordance with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. The agreement was signed last November during COP30 in Belém, Brazil. The KliK Foundation took part in the event, which was organised by the Zambian Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and the Swiss Embassy in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.

Solar greenhouse gas mitigation activity in Morocco officially launched

Another official kick-off event for a greenhouse gas mitigation activity took place in Morocco on 4 February: Solar Rooftop 500 (SR500) was officially launched – a groundbreaking greenhouse gas mitigation activity that supports the expansion of 500 MWp of rooftop photovoltaic systems throughout Morocco by 2030.

The kick-off event, organised by Africa Climate Solutions (ACS) and Cluster ENR with support from Morocco's Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, brought together public and private stakeholders to discuss climate finance, business decarbonisation and the next steps for implementation.
